ChatGPT's Answers Are Turning Into Apps. GPT-6 and Intelligent UI, Explained.

A month ago GPT-6 was something you paid for. As of today it is rolling out to everyone who uses ChatGPT, and it arrives with a feature that changes what an answer looks like: Intelligent UI.

Ask a question and you may get back a chart, a map, a form or a small working tool instead of a block of text. Here's what's new, in plain terms.

From paragraphs to interfaces

OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 to compose responses out of text, visuals and interactive pieces, and to decide for itself which mix fits the question. Graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and mini-apps can all show up inside the conversation.

The examples OpenAI gives are everyday ones. Cooking times for a Sunday roast sitting next to the recipe. The stops on a road trip laid out on a map, with notes on which detours are worth it. A comparison shown side by side rather than described.

And when plain text is the best answer, the model is supposed to just give you text. That judgement call, when to build an interface and when not to, is the part OpenAI says it trained hardest.

Ask for a tool, get a tool

The more interesting half is that you can ask ChatGPT to build something for the task at hand. OpenAI's demos include a savings calculator you can play with, a bill splitter for dinner with friends, and a small retro game you can play inside the chat.

Learning gets the same treatment. Explanations of the central limit theorem or the Monty Hall problem come with inputs you can change to see what happens, rather than a wall of formulas.

OpenAI's framing is blunt: for decades people learned to use fixed software, and now "software will adapt to people."

How it actually works

This isn't the model writing raw web pages from scratch. OpenAI built a library of native components that can be streamed, plus a compiler that assembles the interface while the model is still generating it. So the UI appears piece by piece instead of all at once at the end.

The library keeps every answer looking consistent across web and mobile. The model's job is to choose which pieces to use and how to arrange them. OpenAI says it graded the interfaces during training for clarity, usefulness and completeness, and admits the model's design judgement still has a way to go.

Faster answers, even when it's thinking

GPT-6 also stops making you wait for reasoning to finish before anything appears. It can now interleave thinking with answering, building the response in useful chunks as it goes.

OpenAI's numbers: on internal everyday agent tasks, GPT-6 Extra High starts answering as quickly as GPT-5.6 Medium while scoring better than GPT-5.6 Extra High. For questions that need web search, GPT-6 Instant starts responding 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, and OpenAI says it is better at deciding when to search and at finding sources that actually support the answer.

Who gets it, and when

GPT-6 with Intelligent UI started rolling out today to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users in the Chat tab, powered by a model called GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go users start getting it tomorrow, on a lighter model called GPT-6 Luna. Enterprise availability depends on admin settings.

One detail worth noting: the models behind ChatGPT's Work mode and Codex are not changing in this release. This is about the everyday chat experience used by more than 1.2 billion people a week.

The bigger picture

When an answer is a paragraph, a brand either gets a mention in it or it doesn't. When the answer is a side-by-side comparison table, a map of options or a shortlist with buttons, the stakes change. The products that make it into that table get a row, a logo slot and a click target. The ones that don't are simply not on the screen.

The new web-search behaviour matters too. GPT-6 is now pickier about when it looks things up and which pages it trusts to back an answer. That makes the question of which pages ChatGPT reads, and whether your site is one of them, more important rather than less.
